Premiering at St Kilda Film Festival, 'What Was It Like?' shines a light on systemic ableism

The new documentary explores how children with disabilities are treated within the healthcare and education systems.
Award-winning film director and producer, Genevieve Clay-Smith, has joined the bill for St Kilda Film Festival to premiere her latest directorial work,
What Was It Like?.
What Was It Like? sees eight filmmakers with intellectual disabilities interview their parents about their story and experience of what it was like when doctors delivered the news of their diagnosis.
“They’re asking them about what they were told when they were born, what the doctors said when they were diagnosed, and they also ask them what it was like in other stages of their childhood development when they were told about their diagnosis of disability,” explains Clay-Smith. ....

AFTRS internships for people with disability

The Australian Film Television and Radio School has announced two year-long paid internships for people living with disability, through a partnership with Bus Stop Films.
Audrey O’Connor and Oliver Williams, both young adults who live with intellectual disability and attend Bus Stops` Accessible Films Studies Program hosted at AFTRS, were selected for the internships and will work within the AFTRS production team over the coming year.
Nell Greenwood, CEO of AFTRS, said: “We are expecting this internship program to be transformational – for the selected interns, for AFTRS staff and for AFTRS students who will work alongside Audrey and Oliver. It is our intention to run this internship program annually with Bus Stop Films, giving more people with disability an opportunity to gain valuable paid work experience as they embark on careers in the industry.” ....
