Fewer than 10,000 voters in Bedford County cast a ballot during the primary election on Tuesday, according to unofficial results. While overall vote counts â which totaled 9,587 â were comparatively low to midterm and presidential election years, Deb Brown, director of elections, said there were a high number of write-in votes, which exceeded 2,600. Kevin Diehl of Bedford received 1,588 votes on the Republican side for Magisterial District Judge Office 57-03-2 and will appear on the ballot in November. There were 438 write-in votes for the position. Jodi Tew of Bedford was campaigning as a write-in candidate after Diehl successfully challenged a number of signatures on her nominating petition earlier this spring to remove her from the primary Republican ballot. ....
The Bedford Area School Districtâs school board approved a tentative real estate tax increase as part of its 2021-22 school year budget. The board voted 7-2 in favor of raising the millage rate 3.8% from 9.842 to 10.215 mills as part of the $32.1 million spending plan that includes a $1.2 million deficit. The increase was the maximum the district was able to increase taxes. The tax increase generates about $480,000 in additional revenue for the district. âThis is essentially what we said we were going to do,â Tom Bullington, board president, said, referencing ongoing discussions the board has had over the past year about the need to increase taxes over a period of years as part of a proposed renovation project the district projects will cost about $43 million. ....
