“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade,” wrote Charles Dickens in
Great Expectations.
Yes, we saw exactly what Dickens meant as March 2021 came in cold, became warm, and departed with some chill winds (all in all, a benign month, weather-wise).
But whatever the weather, our forward-looking faculty, students, and staff took it in stride, as you’ll notice in these campus scenes from This Month at Bates.

It’s opening day of the 2021 Major League baseball season, and here are some photographs and stories about the old ball game at Bates.
High Pitch
The Bates Student and an “elongated lefty” by the
Bangor Daily News, the late Donald Webster ’41 wore this glove as a 6-foot-5 lefthanded Bobcat pitcher. He was also a standout high jumper who held the Maine indoor record.
With a nifty curveball and changeup, Webster one-hit the University of Maine 70 years ago this month, allowing only two fly-ball outs and striking out eight.

LEWISTON On a chilly November afternoon in 1912, Bates President George Colby Chase dedicated the cornerstone of what would become the college’s chapel.

He told the audience of students, professors and residents that “eminent and skillful architects” had designed an English Collegiate Gothic-style chapel that would be “commodious, beautiful in outline, harmonious in details and enduring as our New England hills.”
