Fed-up cyclists build pop-up cycle lane on Wellington's Adelaide Road

A group of exasperated cyclists say they have taken matters into their own hands and put in planter boxes along one of Wellington s main commuter thoroughfares to protect bike users.
The installments are the latest in the saga for the capital s controversial cycleways, and could be shortlived as the city council says it will be removing them.
Volunteers from Cycle Wellington built what it is calling a pop-up bike lane to protect cyclists on Adelaide Road.
The group advocates for cyclists in the city, and said its work would extend the existing Island Bay cycleway into the next suburb, Berhampore. ....

To which a twitter reader named Pablo responded:
Who said that WCC is not quick to take action about cycleways? It just happens that removing safe cycling infrastructure is what they are ready to deliver fast, not the other way around. sigh ....

Unauthorised cycle lane returns to Wellington streets, sparking second standoff with authorities

Patrick Morgan, who was part of the group that installed the cycleway, said he had counted 60 cyclists using the pop-up lane on Monday.
“We’re back in business. It’s for the same reason as yesterday, people on bikes deserve safety,” Morgan said.
The deaths of two cyclists during the recent road safety week was a damning indictment of the safety of the country’s roads, he said.
“It’s crazy. It’s become clear that the current system is broken and doesn’t deliver safe streets. The council hasn’t been able to deliver, so the community is doing it for themselves. Your move city council,” Morgan said. ....
