More than a dozen actors both near and far will take the virtual stage this weekend in a production inspired by the tragic loss of a local man.
Called “13 Suits: A Mother’s Monologues,” it follows what happens before and after the death of Patrick Duff, a Niskayuna native who was killed in a hit-and-run accident in 2015. The driver, a young woman, fled the scene and made 17 calls to relatives and lawyers, waiting more than an hour before calling emergency services. By the time help arrived, Duff was dead and his “organ donor” status was no longer relevant. ....

Quick, think of someone unrelated to you who has had a major impact on your life. I’d wager the vast majority of us pictured a face or two, and that nearly all (I hope) represented a positive influence. In my thirty-plus-year career in medicine, I’ve been blessed with several, and their impact on my life and career is truly inestimable.
As a smart kid who went to medical school because it’s what I thought smart kids did, I was ill-equipped for the all-out competitiveness, the unreasonable hours, the complete immersion in school required to excel in medical school in the 1980s (and we had it easy if you asked our predecessors). My goal was to cure cancer or Alzheimer’s, and I received some (bad) advice that I needed an MD to be taken seriously. It’s a good thing I applied as an MD/PhD, because I pretty quickly realized I hated chopping off heads of rats and performing bench research that had little chance of impacti ....

Latest bid to complete pot legalization drops fines for minors

Latest bid to complete pot legalization drops fines for minors
TRENTON A cleanup bill meant to address concerns voiced by Gov. Phil Murphy that have held up enactment of legislation legalizing and decriminalizing marijuana is due for votes Tuesday and Thursday – though for now it, too, is still being cleaned up.
Two-thirds of voters in November approved a constitutional amendment legalizing adult-use marijuana, effective Jan. 1, but the accompanying enabling legislation that is required still hasn’t been enacted, though it was passed in December. Murphy wants specific provisions addressing marijuana use by minors.

The latest version of that plan, S3454, was introduced last week. It would impose $50 civil penalties on people ages 18 to 20 for possession or consumption of marijuana and a tiered system for people under age 18 that includes a written warning, a referral to treatment programs or services and, ultimately, $50 fines. ....

Deafening silence
The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines represent extraordinary scientific achievements. Large clinical trials have convincingly demonstrated that they are safe and remarkably effective.
In these trials approximately 95% of patients clearly benefited from the vaccine. Vaccine recipients either did not become infected, or, if they became infected, they had only a mild clinical illness. By reducing the frequency of infection and/or by ameliorating the severity of  clinical illness, the vaccines are of great benefit in reducing the strain on our already-overburdened health care system.
Given the extraordinary protection offered by these vaccines, it is unconscionable for our governor not to introduce a widespread initiative to educate Floridians about the importance of receiving this vaccine. In addition, the unwillingness of our state public health leaders to weigh in on this issue is very disappointing; their silence is deafen ....
