Harvey Brophy was a resident of East Dorset when he enlisted in the Grand Army of the Potomac in December 1861. He was born into a farming family, the son of Patrick Brophy, who had immigrated here from Ireland. It was through the service in the Civil War by young men like Harvey that the Irish came to be seen as âone of usâ Americans, and less as immigrant newcomers. Almost everybody called themselves a farmer in our pre-Civil War history. Even Ira Cochran, the wealthiest man in all of Dorset, labeled himself âfarmerâ on the US Census worksheets. ....

City Hall photo Like most other facilities in the city of Boston, the Curley Community Center in South Boston – known to many as the L Street Bathhouse – closed its doors last March when Covid-19 reached the region. Unlike most other city facilities, it has not re-opened. City officials made the call to keep it closed and speed up an existing plan to renovate the 70-year-old beachfront center in a massive rehabilitation project that’s intended to make what many consider the “crown jewel” of the city’s community centers even more special. ....
Suffolk has nabbed the city of Boston s highest-ranking construction executive, in an effort to build and expand the construction firm s relationships in government and business. Beginning April 16, Boston Chief of Operations Patrick Brophy will join Suffolk as senior director of external affairs in the Northeast. A 26-year veteran of Boston city government, Brophy served in administrations for three mayors, including Marty Walsh, who recently left the city to become U.S. Labor Secretary. The Operations Department includes the city s property management, inspections and public facilities departments and is responsible for executing Boston s multi-year, $900 million capital building program, according to a city press release. ....
