The Florabama’s annual Mullet Toss is back. At the competition, participants sign up to see who can toss a mullet the farthest across the Alabama and Florida State Line.
Florabama musician Jimmy Louis came up with the idea for the Mullet Toss. It was inspired by a cow-dung throwing competition that he saw in Arkansas.
Pat McClellan, one of the owners of the Florabama, said that he liked Louis’s idea and used it as a way to promote the Florabama. He said that the event started off small, but that people loved it.
“Everybody showed up for the mullet toss. Everyone liked the mullet toss idea. So we set up a little discus circle on the Florida side and we threw the mullet into Alabama so we could say you threw the mullet from one state into the next, sort of a gimmick. But we had all sorts of people come out after that thing,” McClellan said. ....

Good News was brought to the screen for the first time by MGM in 1930 after wowing Broadway audiences in 1927 as one of a new breed of musical comedies which were leaving the established operetta form behind in a wave of nostalgic dust. MGM had originally intended remaking the musical as a vehicle for their new teenaged stars Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, and it remained on their feature schedule for several years until the team had finally disbanded as each star went on to new cinematic pastures solo. Arthur Freed and his co-producer Roger Edens pulled the title from mothballs for a new musical team June Allyson and Van Johnson, but by the time the movie was ready to be produced, Johnson, one of the top ten box-office stars in America, was too busy with other projects and contract player Peter Lawford was substituted. A chilly farewell to 2020 along the Gulf coast

New Year’s Day 2021 was gray, with rough Gulf pounding the beach at the Alabama-Florida state line. A cold rain fell on the white sand. A crowd gathered on the beach. At the end of a dismal, serious year, their costumes were anything but grim. The group included people dressed as Santa Clauses, Baby New Years, mermaids, sea serpents, and Dr. Seuss characters. There were also nuns, hippies and harlequins as well as pirates, penguins, and polar bears.

At noon the day’s festivities were led off by a dog. A real one not a person in a dog costume. Although this dog was dressed up as a reindeer. He led the way as the crowd of about 2,000 plunged into the rough chilly water. The Flora-Bama Polar Bear Dip has been going on since the 1980s. It’s a Gulf Coast tradition, but for many this year, the plunge is a good way to wash away a bad year. ....
