The last time I saw Lokman Slim, the Lebanese publisher and independent activist, was a few weeks ago, on a sunny midweek day in Beirut. He was standing next to Riad Al Soloh square, the site of so many protests, smoking a cigarette, holding two pieces of paper in his hand and waiting to go inside a building housing many regional and international studios for one of his live interviews.
I was wearing my mask and several layers when I spotted him, and feared he might not recognise me through it all.

The current show at Total Arts at Courtyard, Dubai, titled “Second Life” (Jan. 9 Mar. 9), is an exhibition of repurposed objects, artworks and installations, displayed in the new space of Total Arts. It marks the second life of the former furniture store at the Courtyard.
“Second Life” acts as a reminder to reconsider our surroundings from space to materials, and act on them to serve a better purposeful function visually and conceptually.
The exhibition contains artworks and design objects of various sizes, addressing environmental consciousness, preservation and sustainability as their focal point, whether in the choice of medium or concept. ....

Less than a month later, the economic crisis and uprising had started.
Despite Beirut Art Fair having to cancel its 2020 edition, it s been working quietly in the background, looking for ways to keep engaging and supporting local artists.
At the end of November, BAF launched an open call on social media, seeking emerging Lebanese artists who need need a hand, to offset Lebanon’s multiple crises. The idea was to select artworks and offer them for sale, one per day, over the week of Dec. 3-9. After receiving about 200 applications in four days, BAF founder Laure d’Hauteville whittled down the artists to seven. ....
