Garrett renews contract with development partnership

GARRETT — At Tuesday’s meeting of the Garrett Board of Works, Executive Director Anton King of the DeKalb County Economic Development Partnership shared highlights from 2020 amid the pandemic, “which oddly was a record-breaking year from a dollar-investment standpoint,” he said.
“What we saw was it was a time to hit the pause button, with companies realizing where to make their dollar investments strategically. DeKalb County was the benefactor of several consolidations,” he said, reporting some $145 million in investments in the county as a whole, a total 43 deals altogether, not only in manufacturing and distribution sector, but also a great deal of commercial activity, commercial expansions and quality-of-life projects, such as Momentive Performance Materials and the expansion of Shorty’s Steakhouse, both in Garrett. ....

Plans moving forward for development expansion

GARRETT — The Garrett Board of Works gave its approval Tuesday for an escrow agreement between developer Custer Farms Inc. and the Garrett State Bank, and to infrastructure construction plans for phase 2 of Heritage Estates on the south side of town bordering S.R. 327 with an entrance off of C.R. 56.
Both documents needed approval prior to meetings of the Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals next week. Phase one of Heritage Estates, currently under development, includes 69 homes, while the second phase will have 58.
Water utility Superintendent Pat Kleeman reported valves had been shut off in the Heritage Estates development, causing the loop to not work correctly. Once the valves were turned back on, water pressure was retained. The state’s threshold for water pressure has been met, he added, and it is always maintained above that level. As far as the statute goes, Kleeman said the state is more concerned about a backflow situation rather than water press ....

Work has begun this week to dismantle the large, blue slide at the city pool in order for a new slide to be installed this spring, according to Parks Superintendent Eric Mossberger.
The city is taking applications for lifeguards and will train them for the season, with the mindset that the pool will be open this year. Applications can be made at City Hall or on the city’s webpage.
City Planner Milton Otero told the Board of Works Tuesday the 2021 Boundary and Annexation Survey paper maps have been updated and submitted.
