BUFFALO, N.Y. According to Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo, over the Fourth of July weekend, there were 13 shooting incidents in the City of Buffalo that resulted in 21 victims including a three-year-old child. 
During a news conference, Rinaldo stressed that this level of violence affects everyone and, as a community, we have to come together to address it.  ....

Senate Republicans call for laws to protect police

Republicans in the state Senate on Tuesday called for a package of bills meant to bolster protections for police officers across the state amid a broader push by Democrats in the state Legislature to continue with changes to criminal justice laws.
The measures come amid a year-long examination surrounding the role of police and law enforcement agencies in communities across the state and country following last year s protests and civil unrest stemming from the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
In the weeks and months since Floyd s death, state lawmakers in New York have called for, and approved, a series of bills meant to overhaul police conduct and provide more transparency, including a new law meant to provide more public access to police disciplinary records. Lawmakers this year are considering additional bills to address ....

Lanza, a former assistant district attorney in Manhattan, represents a district encompassing most of Staten Island, and is one of the few elected Republicans left in New York City. 
The appointments follow a Nov. 3 election that that seemed promising for Senate Republicans in the immediate aftermath, but after absentee ballots were counted over the course of weeks, resulted in Democrats in fact picking up three seats, and gaining a history veto-proof majority of 43 out of 63.
Lanza gives leadership of the GOP conference a downstate presence; he replaces state Sen. Joe Griffo, who represents a Utica-area district, and recently stepped down as deputy. The leader of the conference, Robert Ortt, hails from a Western New York district. ....

New York lawmaker proposes making COVID-19 vaccine MANDATORY

The bill was proposed by Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal of New York s 67th District and has been referred to a committee for further examination
Rosenthal s mandate would make the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory for all eligible residents if initial doses fail to establish sufficient immunity
The bill adds that anyone who is exempted by a licensed medical professional will not be required to receive the vaccine 
Rosenthal called the bill a protective health measure and said not everyone would have to get the vaccine, so long as a certain number of people do
