OUTDOORS COMMENTARY: Stay safe, and enjoy fishing your favorite lake

I hope everyone had a safe and fun holiday this past Memorial Day Weekend â I know I did, and Iâm sure the many people that were on Pat Mayse did too.
Our lakes are still above normal levels, and some are slightly stained to muddy. Pat Mayse, as well as other area lakes, is this way, and usually the dam areas have the clearer waters. These areas will usually have some kind of rock structure such as chip rock, boulders or concrete. Since most lakes are pretty much free of grass, these rock areas will hold crawfish and other baitfish. This makes it a good choice to work with topwaters, spinnerbaits, bladed jigs or squarebill cranks. However, if youâre fishing on Mayse, you might have to cull through the sand bass unless youâre fishing for them and not the largemouth. Either way, the sand bass will give your younger anglers plenty of action because they put up such a good fight, and they are good to eat also. ....

Maybe after this week the rain will give us a break and hold off for a while. Most of our area lakes are above normal pool; some as much as 4 feet, and others about 2 to 3 feet above normal.
The high water wouldnât be too bad if this was July or August, but not during the spring spawn. Iâm sure we had some spawn on Mayse, but I donât believe it was a full one. Right now, besides being about 4 feet above normal pool, Pat Mayse has water that is heavily stained to muddy. This high water usually scatters the fish but the deeper fish are not bothered as much as the shallow ones. ....

On most of our area lakes, the fish have spawned or are getting ready to begin their spawning cycle. They arenât all in the same spawning cycle though.
On several of our lakes, we still have fish staging or getting ready to make beds. The staging fish out in a little deeper water are the females, and the bed makers are the males. The good thing is the females will eat if you get your bait in front or above them. The reason these fish will eat is because they know that it might be awhile before they can eat again, plus going through the stress of laying eggs. ....
