Public health officials announced eight more deaths and 133 new cases of COVID-19 in Manitoban on Thursday, snapping a two-day streak of cases numbers that fell below 100.
Nearly half of the new cases 61 came in the hard-hit Northern Health region. Winnipeg, meanwhile, had just 29 new infections, the lowest number in the capital since Oct. 17.

Praire Mountain Health recorded a further 19 new cases while 17 additional cases were found in Interlake-Eastern and seven new cases were found in Southern Health.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 8.7 per cent provincially and 5.4 per cent in Winnipeg. As of 9:30am on January 28, 2021, 133 new cases of the virus have been identified. However, one case has been removed due to a data correction. This brings the net-new number of cases today to 132 and the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba to 29,128.
Public health officials advise eight additional deaths in people with COVID-19 have been reported today including:
a female in her 80s from the Interlake–Eastern health region, linked to the outbreak at the Beausejour Hospital;
WINNIPEG Manitoba added eight new COVID-19 deaths on Thursday, and the death toll now sits at 821. Six of the deaths are from the Winnipeg area and all of them are women. One was in her 60s, another was in her 70s and linked to the outbreak at Southeast Personal Care Home. Four were in their 90s, one from the St. Norbert Personal Care Home outbreak, two from the Charleswood Care Centre outbreak, and the last was connected to the outbreak at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. The other two deaths were women in their 80s, one from the Interlake-Eastern Health Region from the Beausejour Hospital outbreak, and the other is from the Southern Health Region and connected to the outbreak at the Heritage Life Personal Care Home.

The province has announced 238 new cases of the virus and nine additional deaths, along with the lowest Winnipeg region COVID-19 case count in over a month.

Out of the 238 cases, 104 are people in the Winnipeg region – the lowest number since early November – and 55 are in the Northern health region, which has been facing outbreaks in First Nations communities. Thirty-three new cases are from the Interlake-Eastern region, 30 are in the Southern Health-Santé Sud region and 16 cases are in the Prairie Mountain Health region.
