Talking Blues: With corruption in fuel tenders and contracts, all Malawians lose

After needless drama, Martha Chizuma was duly confirmed as the Anti-Corruption Bureau Director-General and boy, does she have a lot on her plate!
Even though apart from the inimitable Gustave Kaliwo Esq, no one has excelled in that post, expectations are sky-high.
Chizuma: Honeymoon is over for corrupt criminals.
Her predecessors came brandishing CVs that dazzled. With Kaliwo’s notable exception, those CVs proved to have disappointingly little or non-existent value vis-à-vis:
• Withstanding political pressure,
• Exhibiting Kaliwo-like courage when pursuing ‘Che-Jumos’ and
• In generally making the corrupt uncomfortable.
Here on Talking Blues, we wish Madam Chizuma well in her challenging but achievable task ahead. ....

Talking Blues: Indecisiveness, the kiss of death for President Chakwera

“Indecision and delays are the parents of failure.”- George Canning, British premier, Apr-Aug 1827
I recently stumbled on a fascinating article titled the
Anatomy of Military Incompetence. Its thrust is that failure to make any decision is almost as bad as making a poor decision.
Expressed mathematically, indecision = lousy decision.
The author supports this thesis with a whole platoon of hopeless war generals whose indecisiveness caused disaster, grief, and preventable deaths.
Comparing and contrasting what is worse between making a wrong decision and indecision, Maimonides (a medieval Jewish philosopher and codifier of Jewish law) asserts that the risk of a wrong decision is preferable to what he terms the “terror of indecision”. ....

Talking Blues: A whiff of Chakwera's Valentine Day's bouquet of roses | Malawi Nyasa Times

As with all Valentine Days, this year’s day was not uneventful. Covid-19 notwithstanding, a lot happened.
For fear of opening a Pandora’s Box, I will leave this at that and redirect our discourse elsewhere.
On Valentine Day, President Lazarus Chakwera gifted us a bouquet of roses in the form of his first serious statement of intent vis-à-vis reforming our ineffective, self-serving, and generally corrupt public dis-service, which, if truth be told, is the cause of our endemic misery.
Now, as one Kahlin Gibran noted, roses divide opinions; while optimists appreciate roses’ beauty, in the same roses, pessimists see only thorns. ....
