Controversial Rotorua district councillor Dr Reynold Macpherson will speak at a public meeting in Whanganui next week.
The meeting is being hosted by the Whanganui Ratepayers Association, with Macpherson to talk about the importance of ratepayer participation in local government and his views on the future of district and regional councils, chairman Raymond Brightwell said.
I have recently met with Dr Reynold personally and he is a very interesting and knowledgeable person to listen to, Brightwell said. ....

Police have spoken out after video of a violent arrest circulated on social media, with some comparing police actions to cases of brutality overseas.
An edited version of an incident that occurred on Madras St in central Christchurch last month has been shared widely on social media, showing two officers arresting a man.
The edited clip shows him kicking out at two standing officers while he lies on the ground, before a male officer brings his foot down hard on the man s face, with the impact audible on the video. ....

In mid-April, a community pantry appeared along Maginhawa Street, Quezon City. Its objective was simple: feed the people who are hungry. Get what you need, and give what you can. 
In no time, similar community pantries began popping up all across the country, in a people-led push to bring food to those in need. Make no mistake – what we are seeing is a food revolution, a community-based, people-centric reply to systemic problems that have long kept our brothers and sisters hungry and destitute.
Let’s say it straight – the current food system restricts access to food based on income. This means that those of low income have very little access to the food they need. With many deprived of livelihood under the pandemic lockdown, hunger has skyrocketed. A Social Weather Stations survey reported that approximately 7.6 million families experienced involuntary hunger during the third quar ....

Britney Spears has asked to address the court to talk about the conservatorship that has controlled her life and finances for 13 years, her attorney said yesterday, and a judge scheduled a June date to hear from her.
Spears court-appointed attorney, Samuel Ingham III, said in a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court that she had asked to speak to the court soon, and agreed with Judge Brenda Penny on a June 23 date. He did not say what she would specifically like to say. ....
