The last couple of days has been so upsetting. I thought I had moved on, but realised that I had buried my past.
I was in a mother and baby home in 1987, Dunboyne Good Shepherd Convent. My experience was a good experience. I was treated with respect and kindness.
I was 24 years of age working in the civil service, had a relationship with a separated man and became pregnant. I was full of shame, upset that I upset my family. I turned to Cura, the Irish Catholic Church’s support service for women facing crisis pregnancies, and they helped me. I met a lovely social worker who suggested a few options and Dunboyne was one of them. I had decided from the very start that I would give my baby up for ....

Clonmel man says Taoiseach's Mother & Baby Homes apology not enough

Tipp FM
A Tipperary Mother & Baby Home survivor says the Taoiseach’s state apology in the wake of the publication of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission report will not bring back the years he missed with his mother.
Pat Williams was taken by force from his mother to the Bessborough Home in Cork following his birth in Clonmel while she was brought to an institution in Mullingar.
His mother took her own life a year later – speaking on Tipp Today Pat said Micheál Martin’s apology will not change things for him.
“I don’t think his heart was actually in it.” ....

'This is our history ... we were in the homes'

The brutal treatment Tralee woman Catherine Coffey O Brien suffered in institutions will live with her forever. She is one of more than 56,000 women who were incarcerated in Mother and Baby homes across the country.
Though she may be considered one of the lucky ones as she escaped while pregnant and ultimately kept her beloved son, now 31, others did not get this opportunity. Instead, they were forced to give their babies up for adoption and many died.
The shocking report by the Commission into Mother and Baby Homes published yesterday shows that 56,000 women were sent to institutions from 1922 to 1998 and more than 57,000 babies were born in these very same institutions with one in seven dying, a mortality rate much higher than the infant mortality rate of that time. ....

Bon Secours sisters who ran Tuam home offer 'profound apologies'

The Bon Secours sisters, who ran the mother and baby home at Tuam, yesterday yesterday offered “profound apologies” and acknowledged that children were buried in a “disrespectful and unacceptable way”.
The order said it did “not live up” to its Christianity when running the Co Galway facility between 1925 and 1961.
The congregation offered “profound apologies to all the women and children” of the home, to their families and to the people of the country.
Tuesday’s mother and baby homes commission report “presents a history of our country in which many women and children were rejected, silenced and excluded; in which they were subjected to hardship; and in which their inherent human dignity was disrespected, in life and in death. Our Sisters of Bon Secours were part of this sorrowful history,” the congregation’s area leader Sr Eileen O’Connor said. ....
