Kamala Harris late-in-life love story an example of changing trend • 10 min read Vice President-elect Kamala Harris shared her advice for young women In a 2019 interview, Harris said Don t let anybody tell you who you are, you tell them who you are. Daniel Acker/Bloomberg via Getty Images, FILE As the country celebrates Valentine s Day on Sunday, experts are pointing to the fact that Harris is also the face of a growing demographic of women marrying later in life, if they marry at all. I think this is one of the most significant demographic trends, both in the U.S. and around the world, said Bella DePaulo, a California-based social scientist and the author of Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After. And the demographic trends do mean that, statistically, it is increasingly likely that more women in the public eye will be people who have been unmarried their whole life. ....
Matchmaker, matchmaker Daphney Poyser Daphney Poyser’s Fern Connections wants to help LGBTQ singles find what they are looking for With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, the lion’s share of attention is focused on folks who are coupled and what they need to do to happily remain so. As I’ve argued in my research on the ethics and politics of the family, social practices that celebrate romance, while ignoring the joys of friendship and solitude, reflect widespread assumptions. One is that everyone is seeking a romantic relationship. The second is more value-laden: Living in a long-term romantic, sexual partnership is better than living without one. This fuels beliefs that those living solo are less happy, or lonelier, than couples. ....
Two women walking arm in arm and watching something on the other side of the road. Sankt Moritz, March 1969 (Getty Images) People often ask, what’s the first thing you want to do once the pandemic is over? For me, the answer is easy. I want to spend a whole bunch of uninterrupted in-person time with my closest girlfriends. There is so much I’ve grieved these past 11 months, but perhaps most acutely I miss the company of women. COVID-19 has turned daily life into drudgery. The days are somehow both busy and boring. Time with girlfriends used to be the salve, but nurturing those relationships virtually now requires a level of intentionality that is easily thwarted by the new demands of pandemic life which keep piling up, particularly for women. ....
