On Saint Patrick s Day, we celebrate West Ham United s many links with the island of Ireland.
 
West Ham United have been represented by a steady stream of players from across the Irish Sea.
The first Irishman to wear Claret and Blue was Alex McCartney, who joined from Everton in 1905 and made six appearances as a right-back in the Southern League First Division.
Born in Ballynafeigh in the southern part of Belfast in 1882, McCartney played for Distillery and Linfield before moving to Everton. He returned home to play for Belfast Celtic in 1906 and was capped six times by Ireland. ....

Belfast Celtic and St Mirren met in a friendly match on International Women’s Day in 2019, now the two clubs are entering a partnership together.
The aim is to develop a player pathway between the two clubs and also engage in many programmes to developing senior and youth players.
Kate Cooper (St Mirren Women Head Coach) said: “At St. Mirren FC Women’s and Girls’ Academy it’s important we develop positive relationships with other clubs determined to provide their players with opportunities to develop both as a person and a player. I have no doubt as our partnership with Belfast Celtic develops we will see players and coaches given the opportunity to gain valuable experiences that will ensure they can fulfil their potential and become drivers for the future development of the sport. AN exercise challenge in memory of a young father from west Belfast has raised more than £5,000 for charity in just its first week.
The 100 miles for February initiative was set up by members of two football clubs who had hoped to raise around £1,000 by the end of the month. ....

A heavyweight clash and several matches featuring minnows against bigger guns will be among the mouth-watering and intriguing ties in the first phase of this season’s Sadler’s Peaky Blinder Irish Cup.
The draw for the Round of 32 in the competition - it was made earlier this evening at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park and livestreamed by BBC Sport NI - produced several combinations to whet the appetites of Irish Cup purists.
There will be three all-Premiership clashes when Northern Ireland’s premier cup competition kicks off in early January.
