The artists among us: Daniel Graves | The Florentine

Daniel senses my bubbling enthusiasm and invites me to tour his school, The Florence Academy of Art, along the via Aretina on the city’s outskirts. To enter is to be drawn back centuries. The 100 artist-students, of all backgrounds and ethnicities, might be dressed in 21st-century casual, but one immediately sees Botticelli, Vasari and Nelli in their figures and faces. Some seem to be adorned in 16th-century robes of hemp, palette in one hand, Mahl stick to support the brush hand in the other, a parade of fine artists floating in the natural white light.

That was a little more than a year ago. Now students are separated by plastic, painting through some odd looking-glass in order to stay safe and healthy. The plague has been in these parts before, devastating, debilitating and deadly, but the art of Florence persisted then, as it does now, while the world slowly rights itself. For the moment, the school is not a place for visitors, so Daniel, master ....

In Florence Cathedral, steps and a viewing platform have been added to enable an up-close look at Domenico di Michelino’s 1465 painting,
Comedy Illuminating Florence. Part of the celebrations to mark the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, the initiative sees three of the city’s top institutions - Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, Opera di Santa Croce e la Certosa di Firenze - Comunità di San Leolino – partner for the first time in Florentine history.

“Domenico di Michelino’s painting is perhaps the most famous portrait of Dante Alighieri,” commented Antonio Natali in a press release. “It’s no coincidence that many exhibitions have requested it on loan in 2021, including shows that are enjoying the most attention from the press. However, it seemed unacceptable, during this year of Dante, to deprive Florenc ....

The Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence has begun a major renovation of a Renaissance passageway in a project that the museum’s director Eike Schmidt has dubbed “a warning against all forms of aggression against humanity and cultural heritage”.
The 760m-long Vasari Corridor was damaged in a bombing by the Mafia in 1993 that killed five people. During the ongoing renovation, the structure will be fitted with two memorials marking local acts of terror.
The suspended corridor was commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici and built by the Renaissance artist and biographer Giorgio Vasari in 1565, allowing the Grand Duke to pass unseen between the Palazzo Pitti and the Palazzo Vecchio Cosimo’s residence and the government palace. From 1973, the Uffizi displayed self-portraits by artists including Rembrandt and De Chirico in the corridor, b ....
