San Jose City Council Votes to Rezone Flea Market Land, Replace With Retail, Housing

“The market in its current form will close,” councilman David Cohen.
In a deal with the land owner, he and other city leaders, the development owner will open a $5 million dollar vendor business transition fund, to help vendors relocate.
The city may add another $2.5 million. The flea market can’t close for at least three years and the new project will include a 5-acre urban village, where some of those same vendors will be able to move their shops once the new project is complete.
“Our interest was keeping the market there, or at least some version of it, that would allow us to pay homage to that cultural and economic center in our region,” said Cohen.  ....

Hundreds of vendors from the Berryessa Flea Market in San Jose are now going on a hunger strike after San Jose City Council plan to build a BART Urban Village project at the flea market site. The project is said to have tech offices, apartments, and retail buildings next to the new BART station. If the plan goes through, approximately two-thirds of the flea market that currently holds 430 vendors would be closed after being open for more than 60 years.
The family that owns the land said they would contribute $2.5 million to support the vendor s relocation, which gives about $5,000 for each vendor. The city council plans to vote via zoom meeting on Tuesday, June 22. Check back for more updates. ....
