East Ramapo’s first school board election after a federal judge found the district violated the federal Voting Rights Act didn’t change the balance of power on a body sharply divided by race and religion. But public school parents believe the new election system gave them a stronger voice on an unusual board, where most members are strictly Orthodox Jews who rely on private schools. The public school parents are now pushing the state for additional actions.
“I’m hoping that it brings a sense of pride and representation,” said Ashley Leveille, a Black public school parent who was re-elected this week. ....

State Legislature may restore voting rights to parolees

Ángel Solís of the Bronx was 18 when he first voted, excited to participate in the 2004 election. At the time a registered Republican, having been raised in a conservative household – “everybody hated me in the Bronx” he recalled – Solís said he voted for then-President George W. Bush and that it was “fun” to see his candidate emerge victorious. “I got to see democracy in action from a very young age,” Solís said. “It was my first taste of being a citizen.”

Now 34 and a Democrat, Solís said when he was released in 2016 he didn’t feel much like a citizen anymore. As someone convicted of a felony and on parole, he had lost his right to vote. “I m trying to be a citizen, I m trying to do everything I m supposed to,” Solís said. “Yet I can t participate in the most important thing that we Americans hold dear, I ....

NY-22 becoming a difficult lesson in voter rights, as candidates are 12 ballots apart

There’s still no winner in New York’s 22nd Congressional district, where Republican Claudia Tenney and Democratic Incumbent Anthony Brindisi are vying for the last undecided House seat. This week, county Boards of Elections are recounting some of the race’s ballots. The partial canvasses were ordered by an Oswego County Supreme Court justice after the Boards’ clerical errors made judicial review of hundreds of ballots challenged by the candidates impossible.
It’s unclear just how many hundreds of challenge ballots there are, but with only 12 votes separating the candidates, the court’s rulings on them might determine the race’s outcome. ....
