The body of Charles Vandiford was found around 3 p.m. Friday in the Neuse River in shallow water near Camelot Drive in James City. Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said there was no sign of foul play. One shoe was found yesterday morning off BridgePoine Hotel and Marina near the Cunninghamd Drawbridge and IDed by the family. Searchers from several first response groups had been on the water for parts of three days, while the North Carolina Highway Patrol and NC Wildlife assisted from the air. On the last day seven boats from the Sheriff s office, New Bern Fire Department, Vanceboro Rescue Squad, Tri Community, NC Wildlife and Cherry Point assisted. Sheriff Chip Hughes and Assistant Emergency Services Director Ira Whitford oversaw the operation. ....
The Craven County Sheriff s Office has called off a day of searching the Neuse River for a missing Vanceboro man because of the weather. Charles Vandiford, 72, was dropped off in the area of the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina, Outback and the Neuse River Bridge exit around 7:30 a.m. yesterday and has not been seen since. Major David McFadyen told reporters that there was no certainty that Vandiford was in the water. Rather, since he has not been found elsewhere, it was only logical to begin a river search while other possibilities continue to be pursued. Craven County Emergency Director Stanley Kite also said there is no direct evidence that Mr. Vandiford is in the water but that it is being searched to be sure all the possibilities are covered. ....
He may not be leaving town, but he is leaving the saddle as head of New Bern’s finest, so members of city clergy gathered with a handful of Police Chief Toussaint Summers. Jr.’s staff on Wednesday afternoon to wish thank him and wish him well. Chief Summers, who became the city’s first Black police chief in 2011 will retire on March 19. His replacement, Patrick Gallagher, will take over on the 22nd. Summers has stated that he and his wife, Cheryl, will remain in New Bern as residents. The gathering took place under the pavilion at Lawson Creek Park at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Along with officers and ministers, a New Bern Fire Department truck was on hand to give him a siren salute. ....

For the better part of her retirement, she has dedicated her time to giving back and showing her appreciation for service members of various generations. Although Jo Ann never served in the military herself, her father was in the Army. She still has fond memories of admiring his uniform when she was growing up, which is what first sparked her interest in supporting members of the armed forces. “When I was a young girl, I would go up in the attic and carefully unwrap the paper wrap protecting my father’s heavy wool Army coat and put it on, along with his hat,” she reminisced. “That coat probably weighed as much as I did. It was like a long one down to the knees. And I just felt so proud.” ....
