WellPet has a $3 5 million plan to cut down the smell from its Mishawaka plant

MISHAWAKA — What started as a discussion about a tax abatement request turned into a science lesson on ways to control odors from the WellPet facility. Mishawaka’s Common Council called a meeting this week with WellPet, the longtime pet food facility at 1011 W. 11th St., near Marian High school, over the company’s future request for tax abatement for a new odor control system. Company officials say the $3.5 million system would be more efficient than current control methods. Odors from the pet food plant — which began in 1972 as Eagle Products and was purchased in 2009 by WellPet — have been a constant source of complaints from neighbors who live near the facility.
