A $1 million reward is being offered to solve the mysterious disappearance of a young couple from Sydney s north shore more than forty years ago. Stephen Lapthorne was 21 and his girlfriend Michelle Pope was 18 when they were last seen leaving his home on Wyuna Avenue at West Pymble, on August 25, 1978. They were driving a lime green-coloured 1977 Bedford CF van - with NSW registration plates SL710 - and were believed to be heading to Ms Pope s home at Berowra. A huge reward of $1million has been offered to solve the disappearance of Stephen Lapthorne and Michelle Pope who disappeared 43 years ago The van had a dark green horizontal band along each side, chrome plated mag wheels and a 150cm aerial in the centre of the roof, with a clip-on aerial above the driver s window.

They jumped into his lime green 1977 Bedford CF van and hit the road. But Michelle never made it home, and Stephen didn t get to the snow. After August 25, 1978, they were never seen again. In 2005 an inquest found the pair died, but how or when remains a mystery to this day. In January of this year, the case was referred to the State Crime Command s Homicide Squad, and a formal review was conducted. A re-investigation was launched which involved a two-day search in the Ku-Ring-Gai National Park in June for vehicle parts after a tip-off. These parts were found but were not linked to the couple.

This case was announced on Wednesday as she had worked whilst infectious at Fairfield and RNSH. Testing of close contacts of this case identified an additional eight cases across 3 linked households. Of those cases, five worked in aged care and healthcare, two had worked at Summit Care Baulkham Hills while infectious, one worked at Royal North Shore Hospital, Royal Ryde Rehab hospital and Fairfield Hospital whilst infectious. The others had not worked whilst infectious.
