In Memoriam: Robert Shenk, UNO Professor Emeritus of English


University of New Orleans English professor Robert Shenk, who spent more than three decades teaching technical writing, editing and various literature courses including his perennially popular course on John Milton died Jan. 30. He was 77.
Shenk taught in the Department of English and Foreign Languages for 34 years until his retirement in 2019.
“He was dedicated to his students and the standards and administration of our department,” said Nancy Easterlin, UNO professor of English and women’s and gender studies. “He had the foresight to recognize the importance of internships and worked diligently for a program whose importance is now only being recognized.” ....

William Edward “Bill” Benton Jr., 77, of Huntingdon, went to be with the Lord on Thursday. He was surrounded by family at home. Bill was born in Hollidaysburg, son of the late William E. Benton Sr. and Helena (Yahner) Benton.
He was united in marriage to Susan Sorgen on Nov. 27, 1965, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Jersey Shore.
Bill is survived by his wife; and two children, Polly Benton of Hollidaysburg and William E. Benton III and his wife, Toni, of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; seven grandsons: Nicholas Brenneman, Curtis Brenneman, Elijah Klock, Lucas Thompson, William Benton IV, Charles Benton and Ethan Benton. He is also survived by a sister, Bonnie Cowell, of New Cumberland; and a brother, Gerald Benton, of Huntingdon. ....
