WASHINGTON, DC The Democratic Governors Association invited D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Wednesday to join the organization as a member. The decision marks the first time a government official from D.C. has been allowed to join the group.
The announcement follows last month s vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to pass D.C. statehood for the second time in history. The measure is now held up in the Senate where Republicans and some Democrats still oppose D.C. statehood. ....

A proposal to add more than 400 miles to the region’s existing trail network could create more than 16,000 jobs and generate more than $1 billion a year in revenue from construction and local spending, according to a new report.
Advocates have long touted the health and environmental benefits that completing the Capital Trails Network could bring to residents and businesses in the region, but the study is one of the first to outline the economic effects the project could have on the economy. ....

Trail advocates outline the benefits of building out the region's trail network – Greater Greater Washington

On Wednesday the Capital Trails Coalition released a report coming to a shocking conclusion: trails are good, actually.
Prepared by ESI Solutions and published by the coalition of organizations such as the Washington Area Bicyclists Association and the Rails to Trails Conservancy, the report outlines and quantifies the economic, health, and environmental benefits of completing the network.
According to the report, not only is the region growing and widely supportive of trails, but the COVID-19 pandemic has also sent demand skyrocketing and 53% of those surveyed by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments said they expect to walk more post-pandemic.

DC records 'historic' reductions in homelessness as region sees all-time lows

The number of people experiencing homelessness in D.C. is seeing significant decline, and officials say this indicates that programs to help people are working.
The result of the “point in time” count of people who are homeless was released Thursday. The count is conducted every year by every jurisdiction in the U.S. on the same night in January.
“Overall, homelessness in the city is down 20% from last year and family homelessness is down 50% from last year,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said. “And, for the first time, we saw a small decrease in individual homelessness as well.”
That 20% overall average of categories includes a small increase in chronic homelessness that the city defines as someone having a disabling condition, repeated episodes or being homeless continuously for a year or more. ....
