Commissioner Pleased Berrien County Is Keeping MSA Designation

The decision this week by the federal Office of Management and Budget to halt a proposed change to the definition of a Metropolitan Statistical Area is being welcomed by the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. Speaking during this week’s meeting, Commissioner Bob Harrison said the numbers used by the government to define an MSA do matter to communities.
“Years and years ago, I was a regional health planner, and the reliance on those types of governmental designations was really critical in formulating, in my case, health policy but also in respect to money that comes to the region from both the state and federal government,” Harrison said. ....

Alabama U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville has praised the White House Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) decision to not raise the threshold for cities to be considered a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).
A proposal to raise the threshold from 50,000 to 100,000 would have impacted many cities across the state, his office said.
A number of grants that benefit smaller cities throughout Alabama and the U.S. are only available to those designated as MSAs. ....

Mansfield Not Expected To Lose Federal Funding, Keeping Metro Area Status

Mansfield and Richland County is expected to keep its’ status as a Metropolitan Statistical Area, which means millions of dollars in federal funding will continue to come to the area.
RichlandSource.com reports, the proposal change was that an area needed to have a population of 100,000, not the current 50,000.
Mansfield mayor Tim Theaker said he was happy with the announcement.
Senator Rob Portman said the idea was dropped to ensure fairness to smaller areas. Jodie Perry, from the Richland Area Chamber said, to lose that funding right now would be catastrophic. ....

Jonesboro to keep metropolitan status
JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - Jonesboro and 143 other cities in the United States will keep their metropolitan status after a federal proposal to downgrade the cities was not adopted.
The federal proposal would have changed the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) designation to a population minimum of 100,000 from the original designation of 50,000.
Jonesboro, Texarkana, Hot Springs, and Pine Bluff were four cities in Arkansas that would have been affected by the change.
Jonesboro Mayor Harold Copenhaver says the city can now move forward with citywide projects without the fear of losing qualifications for grant money. ....
