GUWAHATI: Covid-19, which was regarded as an urban disease until sometime ago, has begun to penetrate rural zones of Assam, making the remotest areas vulnerable to the infection in the second wave.
Hariprasad Pegu, a villager from Barpamua village, about 25 km from the headquarters of island district Majuli in upper Assam, has just recovered from the infection. At the same time, there are numerous villages in the Sattra (Vaishnavite monastery) land Majuli where not even a single Covid positive person has been found. But Pegu could not escape the aggressive virus, as his profession as contractor of PWD and state water resources department, compelled him to visit nearby Jorhat and Guwahati on office work. Assam: 70% Covid deaths in last 5 days from 41-70 age group | Guwahati News

GUWAHATI: Though the lethal second wave of Covid-19 has not spared anyone, data shows that about 70% of the deaths related to the virus in the last five days in the state have been of the 41 to 70 years age group. The casualty figures are three times higher in the case of men.
The death rate was recorded to be the lowest in the below 30 age group during this period accounting for 3% of the deaths. Between May 5 and 9, a total of 323 Covid-related deaths were reported from across the state. Of these, the highest 102 deaths were reported from Kamrup (Metropolitan) district covering Guwahati city areas, which has been topping in the daily count of cases. ....
