TODD SMITH — New York Times drops Op-Eds for 'Guest Essays' | MS Business Journal

New York Times has renamed its Op-Ed page, instead calling the articles on the page “Guest Essays,” reasoning that the term has become outdated in our digital age.
The Times Opinion Editor Kathleen Kingsbury explained in a piece published recently that opinion page articles were first called “Op-Eds” because they were printed on the opposite side of the editorial page.
Though many believed they were called “Op-Eds” because the opinions written were opposite that of the paper’s, Kingsbury wrote that the true purpose of the page was to “stimulate thought and provoke discussion of public problems.”
“That important mission remains the same. But it’s time to change the name,” Kingsbury wrote. “The reason is simple: In the digital world, in which millions of Times subscribers absorb the paper’s journalism online, there is no geographical Op-Ed, just as there is no geographical Ed for Op- ....

TODD SMITH — Digital ad revenue increases despite pandemic


Despite the pandemic-fueled headwinds that resulted in marketers slashing budgets, U.S. digital ad revenue still managed to increase more than 12% in 2020 to $140 billion, according to a new report commissioned by the Interactive Advertising Bureau and conducted by consulting firm PwC.
With the pandemic keeping audiences at home and on screens for most of the day, the industry benefited from a surge in the number of digitally-connected consumers during lockdowns, according to the report.
“The second half of 2020 made up for the rather abrupt drop in advertising revenue experienced toward the end of the second quarter,” Susan Hogan, senior VP, research and analytics, IAB, said in a statement. “We not only had a rebound, we also had double-digit growth. The Q4 holiday season sales, typical use-it-or-lose-it year-end spending of media budgets, and revenue from political advertising all helped to offset the early COVID-19-induced decline.” ....

Edelman – a leading global PR firm – has named Lisa Osborne Ross as its new U.S. CEO, who becomes the first Black woman to lead a large global agency.
Ross will begin her new post May 3 at the firm, which boasts $540 million in U.S. revenue, 13 offices and more than 2,300 employees across the nation. She was previously U.S. chief operating officer of Edelman.
She will report to Matthew Harrington, global president and chief operating officer. Edelman’s current U.S. president and CEO, Russell Dubner, has been named global vice chairman and chair of the newly formed Edelman Trust Institute. ....
