Gamble Montessori HS receives national sustainability award

James N. Gamble Montessori High School is one of the nation s 27 Green Ribbon Schools awarded this year for promising sustainability practices, the U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday.
The U.S. Department of Education recognizes Green Ribbon Schools that strive to reduce environmental impact and costs, improve the health and wellness of schools, students and staff and provide effective environmental and sustainability education, according to the website. Gamble Montessori was the only Ohio school recognized in 2021.

Berea City School District begins diversity, inclusion efforts

BEREA, Ohio In compliance with a Board of Education resolution passed unanimously last July, the Berea City School District has begun creating task forces to address diversity, equity, inclusion and justice (DEIJ).
Marissa Wissman of the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio began partnering with the district in January and spoke at the board’s March 1 work session.
The first DEIJ steering committee meeting took place Feb. 18. Efforts in March include determining the scope of work and discovering the unique qualities of the city and district. The design phase is slated for May, with a plan to guide future actions anticipated for June. ....

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio City officials and the Middleburg Heights Chamber of Commerce recently honored SCAN Hunger Center Pantry founder Lona Gruber for decades of selflessness in feeding the needy, as well as serving countless others through participation in numerous local organizations.
Mayor Matt Castelli marked the occasion during the Jan. 26 City Council meeting, proclaiming it “Lona Gruber Day” and reading aloud an official proclamation. Gruber listened in via Zoom. ....
