This Labour Government was elected with what I believe was the largest majority of any Government in my lifetime. That result came on the back of a style New Zealanders warmed to, and a very comprehensive and competent reaction to the challenges Covid-19 presented. I suppose the question now is will that substantial majority translate into actions and polices we warm to? As always, only time will tell. Can one Budget satisfy everybody and deliver something for everyone? Absolutely not. In my view, when we are picking through the pages of the Budget, we need to be asking ourselves whether the right leavers have been oiled enough to give people confidence that we as a nation are on the right track.

The School Strike 4 Climate march in Christchurch.
OPINION: The climate strike last week made me reach far back into my memory files. I tried to put myself in the striker’s shoes. What made me feel fearful as an adolescent? It wasn’t climate change. Nor Bastion Point or abortion debates, issues
du jour when I was 16. No, if I’m honest there was only one fear, the ballot for military service, and that had passed by the time I was the striker’s age. It was abolished in 1972 by Big Norm, when I was 11, but I remember being terrified before then that in a few short years, if my birthdate was drawn, I’d have to kit up and risk life and limb.

What s happening to the wildlife?
Since moving into my flat in Aramoho seven years ago I have noticed a stark change in a wildlife population in my immediate environment. In particular it appears that moths have all but disappeared and I wonder if this is due to an actual decline in the population or if some other phenomenon is responsible, perhaps confined to this area.
Seven years ago I was unable to leave my glass door open to my small garden area at the back in the evenings. When the light was on inside the glass of the door would be covered in moths of all sizes clamouring to get in.
