I would like to begin by extending our deepest condolences to the people of Iraq following the tragic fire at Ibn al-Khatib Hospital in April. This was a terrible tragedy, and it came at a time when we know the Iraqi people are facing devastating effects of COVID-19. Our thoughts and our prayers are certainly with the families of the victims and of all those affected by the tragedy. ....

I would also like to thank Nadia Murad for her powerful briefing this morning. As she did when she advocated for the creation of UNITAD , you again eloquently set out the very real need that survivors of ISIL’s crimes, in getting for justice and accountability. This is the reason we really must ensure that evidence of atrocity crimes is preserved and your courageous testimony today is central to that task. ....

We note with regret and disappointment the lack of substantive engagement by the Syrian authorities in the work of the Constitutional Committee to date, and hope that the response you referred to this morning Geir is a positive one. Despite your intense efforts so far, intransigence continues to frustrate the possibilities for real progress at the Committee. The results of the Committee’s work continue to fall far short of the legitimate expectations of all the Syrian people. ....
