Newly-Elected State Rep. Felicia Brabec Reacts To Her First State Of The State In Legislature

Michigan State Representative Felicia Brabec said she was happy to hear the governor say bipartisian action is what is going to help us move forward in the state. She said it will help put an end to the pandemic, get people vaccinated, and get students and teachers back to school safely.
Representative Brabec said she was also pleased the governor addressed improving state roads and preserving our water infrastructure.
She also agreed with the governor s assessment that the state of the state is that Michigan is resilient.

Good evening.
Last year, I gave my second State of the State address in the House Chamber here in the capitol.
Like much of the last year, this State of the State is different, because it has to be. Tonight, it’s just me and a few people in my Capitol office.
And while it’s different, it s an opportunity to speak directly to you the people of Michigan about the past year, and our priorities in 2021.
At the risk of losing you in the first minutes of this speech, I’m going to use a Latin phrase: Annus horribilis: a year of horribles. Before I tell you more, take comfort in knowing that tough years like 2020, our annus horribilis, are usually followed by great years – and yes, there’s Latin a phrase for that too: annus mirabilis. ....

DETROIT Wayne County and many across Michigan are mourning the death of Sheriff Benny Napoleon, while also welcoming his successor, Raphael Washington, who was previously serving under Napoleon as the deputy chief of jail and courts.
At least 14 applicants were considered to follow Napoleon as sheriff, and on Jan. 15, Washington was selected. A 37-year law enforcement veteran, Washington has served with both the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and the Detroit Police Department.
“I am excited to be named to this position,” said Washington. “It comes with mixed emotions. A dear friend of mine, my boss and my leader, has died. I’m excited, though, and I’m ready to go, and I think I have a lot to bring to the position and serving the public in this way.” ....

I can t shake the feeling that it s 2013 all over again.
Kwame Kilpatrick is free and in the headlines after a midnight-hour commutation from the outbound train wreck known as Donald J. Trump.
Kilpatrick, 50, who served seven years for a racketeering and bribery scheme, never admitted guilt or apologized for bilking the people of Detroit.
“This commutation is strongly supported by prominent members of the Detroit community,” said the White House in an issued statement. “Mr. Kilpatrick has taught public speaking classes and has led Bible study groups with fellow inmates.”
So there s that.
It should be pointed out that Donald Trump granted Kilpatrick a commutation, not a pardon, meaning Kilpatrick is still guilty of his crimes, but won t serve the remaining 20 years on his sentence. ....

DETROIT – The new Wayne County sheriff, Raphael Washington, has served the region for decades and is looking forward to the years ahead.
“I’m a 38-year law enforcement veteran and started with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in 1983,” said Washington.

Over the years and some pit stops along the way Washington worked his way to the top and is now the new sheriff.
“In 1985 I went to the Detroit Police Department for the next 24-years, and I’ve been back here going on 12 years now,” he added. ....
