Week-long programme of interactive games, exciting competitions and unique virtual lab tours set to boost public interest in robotics and intelligent systems
London, United Kingdom, May 25 2021 The EPSRC UK Robotics & Autonomous Systems (UK-RAS Network) today announces the inaugural programme for the UK Festival of Robotics – a brand new 7-day celebration set to boost public engagement in robotics and intelligent systems. This exciting week-long programme will run from 19th – 25th June 2021, offering online events, special competitions, and interactive activities for robot enthusiasts of all ages. Highlight events include:
- Robot Talk Live (18th June, 3pm) - a special live episode of the Robot Talk Podcast. Hosted by Dr Claire Asher and featuring Dr Sophie Armanini (TU Munich/Imperial College London), Matthew Ryan Tucker (University of Bristol) and Ben Scott-Robinson (Small Robot Company), Episode 9 will focus on Robots into the Wild .
- MiRo Maze (21st - 25th June) - take control of a MiRo robot and guide it through our maze in this exciting online tournament for robot enthusiasts of all ages! Organised by Cyberselves Ltd, Consequential Robotics and The University of Sheffield.
- CSI Robot (21st / 25th June) - can you piece together the evidence to solve the robot mystery? In this fun, interactive session, participants will take on the role of a robot accident investigator, work together with others and have fun ‘solving the case!

How Weed Killer Robots Could Revolutionize Farming

It sounds like something out of a science fiction novel. Developers are deploying killer robots that blast their victims with 8,000 volts. There is a crackle, a puff of smoke, and then the target is dead. In this case, this invention is being heralded for promoting sustainable agriculture by reducing pesticide use and promoting soil health.
Bringing artificial intelligence, and killer robots, to farming
The Small Robot Company (SRC) is an agri-tech startup that brings artificial intelligence to the farming industry. Ben Scott-Robinson, CEO of SRC, believes farming will radically change in the next two decades and become unrecognizable. His vision embodies weed control without the use of chemicals with agility and precision.
Small Robot Company launches first commercial robot
Small Robot Company (SRC), a British agritech start-up for sustainable farming, today announced its first commercial robot, ‘Tom’. The Tom monitoring robot is now delivered to commercial specification and entering service on UK farms. Customers include the Lockerley Estate, where robots are a key part of its regenerative farming strategy, as well as Waitrose & Partners and the National Trust.
SRC’s first service using Tom will be per plant weeding, a world-first milestone. This is now in field trials (see demo video), with Tom scanning first arable crops to detect weeds, and robot weeding prototype ‘Dick’ then zapping individual weeds with electrical ‘lightning strikes’, using no chemicals. On-farm pilots of the service will commence this autumn.
