Damon Krane aims to push Democrats further left with City Council bid

Damon Krane, a longtime area activist and unsuccessful 2019 candidate for Athens mayor, announced last week that he’s running at-large for City Council as an Independent to push city leaders further to the left on issues like housing and racial justice.
Krane, a fourth ward resident who’s been mulling a Council bid for months, settled on entering the at-large race after becoming attracted to its multi-candidate dimension. All three at-large seats are up for grabs this election cycle.
“I just think a multi-candidate race is more conducive to discussion, which means it’s more conducive to city issues getting raised and discussed more thoroughly,” he said. ....

Athens City Councilmember Pete Kotses to resign, ending his final term prematurely

Athens NEWS Associate Editor
Athens City Councilmember Pete Kotses said Monday that he’s resigning at the end of the week, bringing his three-term career as a member of the body to an early close after announcing in January he wouldn’t seek another term.
Kotses, an at-large Democrat, said in an interview that he decided to leave once it became clear that the primary to replace him was uncontested with Ben Ziff, a Donkey Coffee manager, pursuing the Democratic nomination. It’s still possible that Independent candidates could surface in the general election.
Kotses said his life shifted radically in 2020 after closing his bicycle shop, which monopolized much of his time over the years, contributing to his decision to step down from Council. ....

Athens could have its most competitive election season in years, and it would be thanks to Damon Krane

With all eight City Council seats up for grabs, two without incumbents, this year could bring Athens one of the most competitive election seasons in recent memory. And much of it could end up attributed to the behind-the-scenes organizing of Damon Krane, a longtime area activist and self-proclaimed democratic socialist.
In the aftermath of a tense and confrontational election season in 2019 Krane — an Independent who ran an unabashedly pro-tenant, anti-establishment campaign, lost by a wide margin to Democratic Mayor Steve Patterson, followed by failed attempts to reform city policing procedures — recoiled behind the curtains to draw up new ways to implement his policy priorities in Athens. ....
