The Next Draft: Sam Adams-Wormtown collab showcases brewer s local roots Matthew Tota Sometimes, a certain kind of success in the craft beer business can bring criticism. Brewers putting out millions of barrels of beer get accused of growing out of the so-called craft category. For producing at such a massive scale, they are lumped in with the big commercial guys accused of losing the independence that propelled their achievements in the first place. I have often been such a critic, perpetuating this narrative. But lately, I’ve found myself treating some mega-craft brewers like Boston Beer Co. unfairly, forgetting that behind the billions of dollars, teams of lawyers, corporate boardrooms and massive mechanized brewhouses exists a core group of local people. ....
By Matthew Tota In less than a month, Wormtown Brewery will have completed 11 years of brewing beer in Worcester. Such anniversaries usually get mentioned as footnotes, not milestones. But last March Wormtown did not have the chance to celebrate its 10th birthday, first postponed over the concerns for the growing coronavirus outbreak, then canceled altogether. Wormtown will not schedule a big party this year, for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, this anniversary feels as significant and will receive just as much if not more reverence: It’s a massive year for the brewery. Wormtown has an impressive, daunting schedule for 2021, including opening a new taproom at 75 Shrewsbury St. and becoming the city’s first distillery. ....
Opinion/The Next Draft: Flying Dreams leaves Worcester – for now By Matthew Tota Correspondent For the first time in more than a decade, a brewery will not call the back of Peppercorn s Grille & Tavern home. Flying Dreams took over the roughly 1,200-square-foot space in November 2015 when Wormtown Brewery moved production to its new brewery on Shrewsbury Street. Now, technically, Worcester is down to five breweries: Wormtown, 3cross Fermentation Coop, Greater Good Imperial Brewing Co., Redemption Rock Brewing Co. and Bay State Brewing Co. ....
Wormtown Brewery plans larger taproom next door, add distillery Brewery plans larger taproom next door, moves to add distillery Matthew Tota Correspondent When Wormtown Brewery’s Shrewsbury Street taproom opened on St. Patrick’s Day 2015, it carried an aura of coolness and originality that captured the essence the city’s first brewery in decades. Sure, the taproom was small but by design. Examining an early drawing of the taproom two years earlier, co-founder Ben Roesch and managing partner David Fields had deemed it too large, taking away valuable space for brewing and bottling. “We both looked at each other and said, ‘What is that? We don’t need that much space for our taproom. We need production space,’” Fields has said. “And we had them shrink our taproom by at least 50 percent, maybe more.” ....
