Solons seek to criminalize red-tagging

MANILA – Lawmakers in the lower house filed a counterpart measure seeking to criminalize public officials, employees or their agents for red-tagging.
Nine lawmakers filed on May 24 House Bill 9437, which seeks the imprisonment for up to six years and perpetual absolute disqualification to hold public office for those who will be found guilty of red-tagging.
Filed by members of the Makabayan bloc, Quezon City Congressman Jose Christopher Belmonte, Albay Congressman Edcel Lagman and La Union Congressman Pablo Ortega, the bill that red-tagging by public officials and their agents “brings about chilling effect and poses a great danger to the people’s Constitutional right to freedom of expression and the right to political belief without fear of prosecution.” ....

Human rights lawyer Angelo Karlo Guillen: Committed, unshaken

MANILA – Because of the volume of work that he had to finish, human rights lawyer Angelo Karlo Guillen goes home late at night.
That fateful night of March 3, the life of Guillen was shaken as two men wearing ski masks attacked him, stabbing him several times with a screwdriver. He was on his way home after a very long day at work.
Guillen survived the attack and has since returned to work.
As a member of the National Union of People’s Lawyers, he has committed himself to defending the defenseless. The cases he is handling includes that of the 16 Tumanduk farmers who were arrested in Capiz and Iloilo provinces on December 30, 2020. He is also the legal counsel of one of the 37 petitioners against the Anti-Terrorism ....

An advocacy group has asked the Supreme Court (SC) to take immediate action against what it called as “unethical, unprofessional and dangerous” request by the Calbayog City police to the city’s regional trial court (RTC) for a list of lawyers handling cases of “communist terror groups.”

In a statement, Kapatid – a support group of families and friends of political prisoners – said the SC “must come to the defense of those who are only doing their job as officers of the court to provide legal assistance to the marginalized and vulnerable like activists and indigenous people.” ....

Manhattan Beach has shuttered public seating areas that were transformed from outdoor dining decks, and drew the ire of Los Angeles County public health officials, because of the ongoing coronavirus surge — though the fate of those spaces will likely face scrutiny again this week.
The city on Saturday, Jan. 2, announced that it would close public seating areas, removing chairs and tables, as coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths continue soaring, largely because of holiday gatherings and people ignoring health guidelines. Creating the public seating areas, a largely semantic strategy to allow people continue eating at dining decks near restaurants but without the benefit of tableside service, was the city’s way of balancing public health needs with the the impact coronavirus-related business closures have had to local companies. ....
