Chief executives were forced to batten down the hatches and pull every available lever to preserve cash as Covid pressed the stop button on the global economy. Dividends were quickly scrapped, investment shelved, daily spending on all-but essential items curtailed, and finances strengthened with emergency cash calls and government-backed Covid loans. Many firms were quick to swing the axe, closing factories, mothballing sites, and slashing the workforce. Others that didn’t have the stomach for the fight sold out at the first chance to opportunistic bids from private equity firms and foreign rivals.
