First reading, vote on proposed Oak Ridge Schools’ budget tonight Oakridger The first reading and vote on the 2021-2022 budget proposal for Oak Ridge Schools is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at the School Administration Building at 304 New York Ave. The public may attend the meeting and comment. The second reading and vote to adopt the budget proposal is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, May 24. The school system’s budget proposal will then be sent to City Council. The proposed budget, presented by Oak Ridge Schools staff, is available at the school system’s website ortn.edu. Both a presentation to the Board of Education and a memo to Oak Ridge City Council explained the proposed budget will not involve any request for local money above the amount City Council gives the school system using a set funding formula, or any increase in the city property tax rate. ....
Board gives OK to therapy center having horses Oakridger The Oak Ridge Board of Zoning Appeals has approved a future therapy center in Oak Ridge to have horses. The couple who hope to develop the land are Sean and Sarah Pennington. Sean Pennington, an Oak Ridge resident, has said the business focus would be on helping people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and child therapy, with therapists using horseback riding as an activity for the clients. He called it a “marriage and family therapy counseling practice.” However, in more recent interviews after the board s decision, he said he was open to helping many different individuals as well with therapy, including working with Oak Ridge Schools. ....
Oakridger NORRIS Many trails 87 miles total make up the Norris Lake Area Trail System (NATS) around Norris Lake. They will give hikers and and, in some places, cyclists or horseback riders a variety of different paths to explore through woods, up hills and around the shores of Norris Lake. The trails are within 15 miles of each other, an official website for the system stated. All are free and open to the public, a news release stated. On Friday, April 9, officials from the TVA and the involved parks and counties cut a ribbon announcing the trail system, attracting reporters from various media outlets. They met at Norris Dam State Park’s Picnic Shelter One on the east side of the park near the Tea Room in the older portion of the park. Obituaries Obituary Anderson County Sheriff s Office reportedly found a suspect wanted in Ohio, hiding inside First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge on Sunday. The city of Oak Ridge reported in an email that the suspect, identified as Casey John Jones, 30, of Columbus, Ohio, was wanted by authorities in Ohio with full extradition. The charges in Ohio were reportedly narcotics- and weapons-related, and officials were informed that Jones should be considered armed and dangerous. The Rev. Mark Flynn told The Oak Ridger no one was injured during the incident. The man reportedly fled inside the church in between church services on Sunday. ....
Oakridger Sixty-six years after 85 Black students became the first in the Southeast to be integrated into a government school after the Brown v. Board of Education decision, Oak Ridge Schools is asking the state to include this information in the state curriculum. Oak Ridge Schools Superintendent Bruce Borchers said Kelly Williams, the city schools executive director of teaching and learning, is working on having the historical information adopted into the state curriculum for public schools instruction. However, he told a virtual audience at an Altrusa International of Oak Ridge meeting that adding it to the state curriculum is “not easy.” ....
