However, in a move that widened the gulf between nationalists and republicans, the SDLP gave their backing to the controversial proposals. In Maine, baby boomers own 12,790 businesses that employ 108,000 people and many of these businesses will need to transition to new ownership in the coming years. Recent research from Wilmington Trust found that almost 50% of businesses owned by those 65 and older â which constitute 60% of all business owners â have no succession plan. Faye Gilbert, executive dean of the Maine Business School and interim dean of the Graduate School of Business, and Jason Harkins, associate dean of the Maine Business School, will lead the program, which is free and open to the public. Last Thursday, the Maine Legislature passed a supplemental budget package that will provide a full state tax exemption to federal Paycheck Protection (PPP) grants for 28,000 profitable businesses as well as tax breaks on the first $10,200 of federal unemployment benefits for 160,000 unemployed workers.
