The final design for the Washington Street Park, known as “Hot Corner Mural Park,” was approved by commissioners on Tuesday.
The site for this park is on the corner of Washington and Lumpkin streets, and in its current form, is a parking lot approximately the size of a basketball court. When the project is complete, it will be a green celebration of the Hot Corner, the historically black business district in downtown Athens.
Facing the park will be the Costa Building, home to the Hot Corner Mural, “Hot Corner: An Athens Legacy.”  This mural depicts Black community members, including Monroe “Pink” Morton, barber Homer Wilson, and several black musicians. ....
