WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Confederate monuments have become a flashpoint for protesters following the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota last summer. In response to the unrest, cities, states, and counties across the nation removed some of these symbols.
That’s because of a state law that restricts the removal of such monuments and statues which was passed relatively recently.
“A North Carolina law, adopted in 2015 and codified as North Carolina General Statute (G.S.) § 100-2.1, requires that objects of remembrance on public property cannot be removed or relocated except in certain circumstances,” according to a UNC School of Government article on the topic. ....

Granted, the indoor section of The Transplanted Garden makes for tight quarters, but the expansive, plant-filled grounds are a social-distancing dream. That’s likely a big reason that the Wilmington business at 502 S. 16th St. has had sales “pretty much where they should be” in recent months, according to co-owner Tom Ericson.
A few blocks over, the Historic Wilmington Foundation (HWF) reported brisk sales at its outdoor Holiday Gift Market, held annually at the organization’s Legacy Architectural Salvage store. The store’s site, at 831-B Dawson St., behind Stevens Ace Hardware, provided a large, open-air area for vendors.
