Wings of the City exhibit draws complaints of indecency in Greenville

Complaints from residents who are upset about sculptures of naked men in downtown Greenville may cause the Hispanic Alliance to lose a county grant.
An advisory panel had recommended awarding an accommodations-tax grant of $7,500 to the Hispanic Alliance to promote the Wings of the City sculptures that were unveiled April 2 in Falls Park and on the Peace Center campus.
But Greenville County Council Chairman Willis Meadows objected to the grant during a Finance Committee meeting Monday afternoon.
A good many councilmen have been getting emails on, and questions about, this Hispanic Alliance and the promotion of the Wings of the City sculptures, Meadows said. I don t think that is one thing County Council should support. ....

Greenville citizens respond to controversial Wings of the City exhibit

Morgenroth said Tuesday that the bronze sculptures bring a touch of culture and enrich the park.
Greer resident Allison Saravia offered a starkly different assessment of the exhibit when she spoke at Monday night s Greenville City Council meeting. She questioned whether the nudity depicted in the sculptures is just art.
I’m keeping myself pure for marriage, and that 100% includes keeping my eyes pure. I thank God somebody warned me about the statues, because if I had gone downtown unknowingly, that would have robbed me of my innocence, and you would have been responsible, Saravia told council members. You have no idea how profoundly that would crush my spirit. Do you care at all that you’re making hundreds and more people cry bitter tears? ....

Greenville SC development moratorium fails vote Monday

Greenville City Council declined to adopt a six-month development moratorium Monday and instead voted to work on changes to its laws governing development within the city.
The proposed moratorium, which drew condemnation from developers when council first discussed it in March, failed a 4-3 vote Monday night. Instead, council charged city staff with creating text amendments to the land management ordinance  amendments that will address design and dimension standards as well as project and buffering requirements, according to an emailed statement from city government spokesperson Beth Brotherton.
The amendments apply to non-residential and multi-family buildings that are adjacent to residential homes, and they will be intended to provide more of a buffer for residential neighborhoods while the city more permanently rewrites its rules for land use. ....
