FINDINGS
Information shared by women with metastatic breast cancer on social media platforms like Twitter may be a timely source of data for policymakers hoping to improve care and outcomes for these patients.
UCLA researchers found that participants in a Twitter group chat about metastatic breast cancer identified a number of significant barriers to care, including communication gaps between health care providers and patients, delays in insurance authorizations for treatments and other procedures, insurance denials of palliative or specialized care, and challenges in obtaining disability benefits.
Based on participants’ online comments, the researchers say, patients could benefit from a variety of policies, including those that would improve access to clinical trials and expand the availability of nurse navigators who work with patients to overcome barriers to care. ....

More New Orleans students going to college than before Katrina, study finds

Ever since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, critics have questioned New Orleans public school reforms. They re skeptical of the proliferation of charter schools. They worry about long commutes associated with school choice, as opposed to neighborhood assignment. And they say not enough has been done to alleviate racial segregation, with the most selective schools still enrolling a disproportionate number of White students.
But by at least one measure, the reforms are working. In a new study, the Education Research Alliance for New Orleans at Tulane University found students now are more likely to be accepted into college than they were in 2004, and that the quality of colleges they are attending has increased. ....

UNM gave grad a degree and a new family

It was soon after her 30th birthday that Beth Glenn woke up one night and told herself “I have to do something different.” A fan of the series ‘Breaking Bad,’ which was filmed in New Mexico, she decided Albuquerque looked intriguing, so she packed up, moved, and started studies at The University of New Mexico. She graduates this week.
Beth Glenn and family
“I am from St. Louis, Missouri originally and came here because something spiritual led me to New Mexico. I still can’t explain it, but I am glad that it did,” she said. “I started this journey thinking that this degree was just for me and for my dreams. I have since learned that this degree is for my entire family. For my father who didn t live to see this day, for my mother who worked several jobs at times just to take care of me and my brothers, for my brothers who always believed in me, and for my nieces and nephews to see that they can do it too.” ....
