Visiting restrictions to maternity hospitals should be risk assessed to show how they are protecting women and staff, maternity advocates have said.
The call comes as a number of hospitals eased some restrictions in the last few days, but others have made no change. This only deepens the inequity of access, advocates say, as they demanded the science behind these changes be made public. ....

Al Wakra Hospital non-COVID-19 obstetrics and gynecology patients transferred to WWRC

Doha: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has announced on Twitter that services for all non-COVID-19 patients in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Al Wakra Hospital have been transferred to Women’s Wellness and Research Center (WWRC) to receive the necessary care. This is in line with an earlier announcement that Al Wakra Hospital was designated as a medical facility for Covid-19 cases.
The Ministry also mentioned that all Al Wakra patients due for outpatient appointments will be contacted either through a phone call or a text message to inform the patients that they have been booked for a virtual or face-to-face consultation. It also added that patients can call the Al Wakra Hospital hotline numbers 4011 5442/4011 4755 for assistance. ....

Simple fetal heartbeat monitoring still best to reduce unnecessary cesarean sections


Cesarean delivery is the most common surgical procedure worldwide, performed to expedite birth and avoid neonatal complications.
Listening to the fetal heart rate using a stethoscope intermittent auscultation has been used for years to assess the fetal state and whether the baby is experiencing distress that might require a cesarean delivery. Other monitoring techniques have become common in recent years, including echocardiograms and blood tests.
Despite extensive investment in clinical research, the overall effectiveness of such methods in improving maternal and neonatal outcomes remains debatable as stillbirth rates have plateaued worldwide, while cesarean delivery rates continue to rise, writes Dr. Bassel Al Wattar, Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, Coventry, United Kingdom, with coauthors. ....
