There and back again: Charlie Fautin traveled a long way to make Corvallis his home


Charlie Fautin got into nursing to see the world, but in the end his travels led him to find a home in Oregon.
As he prepares to retire at the end of the year from his position as deputy director for public health with the Benton County Health Department, Fautin looked back over his globe-trotting career.
“My path,” he said, “has been non-linear.”
Born and raised in Wyoming, Fautin spent two years of his childhood in Afghanistan, where his father, a zoology professor at the University of Wyoming, had gone to do some work with Kabul University. Fautin recalls meeting the Afghan royal family and turning out with the rest of the American community in Kabul to cheer the arrival of Dwight D. Eisenhower during a presidential visit in 1959. ....

Weekly COVID-19 case update: Benton County 'considered at extreme risk' according to Oregon Health Authority


The Benton County Health Department reported 254 COVID-19 cases over the past two weeks and is considered at Extreme risk by the Oregon Health Authority. The total confirmed cases in Benton County as of Dec. 19 is 1,122 positive cases with a current average positivity rate of 2.8%. 
Compared to the previous two weeks, there has been an increase of 100 COVID-19 diagnoses.
Benton County is in Region 2, which includes Benton, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Polk, and Yamhill Counties. In Region 2, a total of 668 hospital beds are in use out of the 787 beds available, and 87 ICU beds are in use out of the 127 ICU beds available as of Dec. 19.  ....
