Opinion | Rufus Woods: Can we support local toy drive better in the midst of Covid-19?

One of the important civic endeavors this time of year is the Les Schwab Toy Drive. It s a collaborative community effort that is getting toys for kids and delivering them to key nonprofit organizations like Serve Wenatchee Valley, Womenâs Resource Centerâs Bruce Transitional Housing, Chelan-Douglas CASA, Cashmere Cares, Childrenâs Home Society, SAGE Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center, among others.
The effort started about six years ago serving perhaps a few dozen kids and has grown exponentially because of the collaborative approach that the nonprofit has adopted. There is no paid staff â everyone is donating their time. ....

EAST WENATCHEE â Two cloth bags over each arm, Kai Bromiley set off around the gym. By the time he completed the loop, the bags were stuffed to the brim with supplies.
Bromiley was among a few dozen volunteers who gathered Saturday and Sunday to assemble kits of hygiene products and other essentials for those in need. The project, called Holiday Help for the Homeless, is now in its sixth year.
âWe have some folks here who Iâve met through Facebook who have experienced homelessness themselves,â co-organizer Karen Cunningham said Saturday. âSo itâs a mixed bag of people and a mixed bag of reasons why theyâre here, but itâs all because they want to help.â ....
