ATLANTA The Flowery Branch girls are quickly becoming THAT team.
You know, the one that struggled through adversity all season only to finally find its talented groove at the right time. The one no one suddenly wants to play.
The Lady Falcons put on an impressive first-half display en route to a 45-35 win over Region 6-4A champion Marist on Friday on the road in the second round of the Class 4A state tournament.
After a 6-12 start to the season due to a variety of reasons (mainly COVID issues), they have now won 8 of the last 10 overall.
“We had two really tough stretches with COVID so to see them have success right now almost makes me tear up,” Flowery Branch coach Courtney Newton-Gonzalez said. “Our kids have really just locked into what we’re trying to do right now. We had about seven different defensive game plans coming in.
MACON The Chestatee girls wrestling team secured the school’s first-ever team state title holding off a half-dozen top contenders in the girls state meet Thursday at the Macon Centreplex.
Chestatee finished with 103 total points with Alexander out of Douglas County taking second with 89. Greenbrier, near Augusta, took third with 86 points.
The Lady War Eagles held a slim lead going into the second day and Isabella Redlinger sealed it with a win over Osborne’s Kiarra Nylander in the 225-pound finals for the individual state title.
Redlinger was the only individual champion for Chestatee, but Catarina Velasquez (102) and Ashley Godinez (152) both finished second for the Lady War Eagles.
The Lady War Eagles, who never trailed in the game, drained five 3-pointers in the opening half as they stormed out to a 33-12 halftime lead. Annie Dollyhigh opened the game with a trey and Riley Black and Emma Easterwood each knocked down a pair of 3-pointers.
Chestatee also took advantage of Lady Falcons foul trouble, who had two of their top three scorers Ashlee Locke and Shaina Kriews pick up three fouls each after scoring just two total points in the first half.
The game was tied at 3 after Bella Brick answered Dollyhigh with a 3-pointer for Flowery Branch. But the Lady War Eagles exploded for a 15-4 run, capped by an Easterwood trey, for an 18-7 lead. Locke’s only basket of the half closed the gap to 18-11 but Chestatee closed out the half with a 15-1 run for a 33-12 lead.
