Phase One of Alaska SeaLife Center’s Rocky Coast Discovery Pools Completed Alaska SeaLife Center The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) opened phase one of the Rocky Coast Discovery Pools. Development of the new touch pool exhibit began with design work in 2017. Installation required a complete demolition of the former touch pool originally built in 1998. The new 1,100-gallon exhibit, equipped with six pools, was inspired by similar exhibits at various Association of Zoos and Aquariums facilities in the United States. EDITOR, Daily News: I have heard from a number of constituents and community leaders about their concern for the purchase of Crowley Fuels by Petro Marine. Not only have I heard from many individuals, but I have also heard from both the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and the City of Ketchikan that this merger will impact their budgets at a time when both entities are already struggling to deal with a major loss in revenue. I, too, am concerned. Here are some of the points I hear most often: 1. Most comments compare this situation to the merger of AML (Lynden Transport) and Northland Services, Inc. This monopoly creating acquisition will inevitably lead to substantially higher gasoline and diesel prices in Southeast Alaska. What s to prevent Petro Marine from gradually raising prices to just below the point where another competitor could come in to compete? If Petro Marine owns the entire oil infrastructure system in Southeast Alaska, wouldn t it set a high threshold for any future competitor? Wouldn t this result in hard-earned money being pulled out of our pockets and substantially raise the cost of doing business in all communities in Southeast Alaska? ....
The first hour of the regular Ketchikan City Council meeting was filled with public comment Thursday evening, with community members supporting a motion on the agenda to commission a totem pole to honor Alaska Native civil rights activist Elizabeth Peratrovich; speaking to the council s effort to urge legislators to resume the Ocean Ranger shipboard monitoring program; and a representative from Petro Marine Services offering information about the company s pricing structure as it takes over Crowley Fuels in Southeast Alaska. The second hour was taken up with a discussion about whether a COVID-19 program authorized under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act â the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act â should be extended for city employees through June 2021, and the first portion of a presentation about the resumption of the cruise industry in Alaska by representatives from Royal Caribbean International. ....
