New Bridge Construction Is On Time, On Budget

Construction of the new bridge over the Petitcodiac River linking Moncton and Riverview is on time and on budget so far according to officials with the New Brunswick Department of Transportation.
Modern Construction is the main contractor on-site which is actually the same company that helped build the causeway in the 1960s.
Department of Transportation assistant director of operations Michael Pauley says the work has been broken down into phases.
“We’ve started excavating the lower part where the new channel is going to enter under the new bridge – we call that Zone 5 and that’s almost complete. Right now they are moving on to Zone 6, which is the detour that drivers were using during the bridge construction and they are starting to excavate that.” ....

Drone Footage Of The Causeway Bridge Construction

Ritchie Boyd has created drone footage of the construction being done on the new Causeway Bridge.
The Causeway closed on April 5th for six months to complete the opening of the Bridge and the restoration of the Petitcodiac River.
Boyd is also interested in finding someone to professionally edit the footage and have a music added to the videos.

For motorists, this six-month road closure will cause some headaches. It’s one of just two links between these communities, which is the main reason it’s taken this long for a new bridge to be built in the first place. Monday morning was the first day that area commuters had to deal with the new traffic flow. While local media aired plenty of images showing backed up traffic, representatives from municipal councils said the snarls were not as bad as expected, with commutes taking about 15 minutes longer than normal. To help mitigate traffic issues, the City of Moncton adjusted the timing of traffic lights in the area, while Codiac Transpo set up a park and ride service for motorists travelling from Riverview into Moncton.
The original causeway, built in the 1960s, was intended to act as a commerce boost between the communities of Moncton and Riverview, assisting the flow of traffic while also helping with water management issues. An unexpected effect of the causeway? It essentially turned the upper portion of the river into a lake, spoiling the area for different species of fish and changing the flow of sediment. The latter issue has caused the river’s channel to narrow over the years. Gates in the causeway’s structure intended to mitigate these problems had varying levels of effectiveness; they’ve been left open for the last decade to help restore tidal flow. ....
