Shane Meadows to create West Yorkshire-set Cragg Vale Coiners series | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

ACCLAIMED director of This Is England Shane Meadows is to create a television series set in West Yorkshire for the BBC.
Meadows, whose film and subsequent TV series on skinhead culture in Northern England drew critical acclaim and cult status, is to adapt the book The Gallows Pole for TV.
The Gallows Pole, a novel by Benjamin Myers, fictionalises the true story of David Hartley and the Cragg Vale Coiners and is set during the Industrial Revolution in 18th Century West Yorkshire.
It follows Hartley as he assembles a gang of weavers and land-workers to become counterfeiters, starting a criminal enterprise that will capsize the economy and become the biggest fraud in British history. ....

A new project from I May Destroy You creator Michaela Coel, a period drama from This Is England’s Shane Meadows and an adaptation of Dolly Alderton’s memoir Everything I Know About Love are among the upcoming dramas from the BBC.
The corporation also announced playwright Cash Carraway will write a series inspired by her debut memoir Skint Estate, which will star This Country’s Daisy May Cooper, while Theresa Ikoko, the writer of Bafta-winning film Rocks, will adapt the novel Wahala. ....

“Queenie” author Candice Carty-Williams, “Everything I Know About Love” writer Dolly Alderton, “The Virtues” creator Shane Meadows and Michaela Coel are among the creatives delivering the next slate of dramas for the BBC.
Piers Wenger, drama controller for the BBC, teased a new project with Coel on Tuesday during a showcase of the Beeb’s upcoming drama offerings, though details were sparse. The “Chewing Gum” creator’s recent BBC collaboration, “I May Destroy You,” a searing portrayal of a woman rebuilding her life following her rape, has won international acclaim. ....

Ask an American to imitate a British way of speaking, and chances are they’ll adopt the Queen’s English. But times are changing, according to the BBC’s drama chief, as international audiences embrace shows with regional accents.
Peaky Blinders and Normal People are among the shows that have become worldwide hits - helped by the fact that anyone struggling with the dialects can add subtitles when watching on Netflix or Amazon. ....
